What is Alpha?
You will have seen the banners around the Church this week promoting Alpha, which will run at Our Lady of Dolours in March.
Alpha is around 10 interactive sessions, typically run over about 8 weeks, including a Saturday, where anyone can explore life and the Christian faith in a friendly, open and informal environment.
Everyone is welcome, but Alpha is designed particularly to work for people who would not describe themselves as Christians or church-goers. However, as it explains all the basic beliefs of Christianity it is a great refresher for all Catholics.
There's no charge to attend Alpha - it's free!
Alpha started in England in the 1980's and so far around 29 million people have attended in the Catholic Church and many other denominations. Fr James Mallon, a Catholic Priest and author of the book "Divine Renovation", said that in his parish 50% of attendees have had a "life changing experience" and a "profound experience of community..." People just love Alpha!
Alpha sessions involve a shared meal, a video or talk about an aspect of life or Christian faith, and discussion in small table groups.
